SHAN AHMED, DO, MS, MBA

Dr. Shan Ahmed is a seasoned physician executive and nationally recognized leader in emergency and hospital medicine. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre. Since joining Mercy in 2017, Dr. Ahmed has championed clinical excellence, patient safety, and operational efficiency, leading the hospital through transformative initiatives in both hospital and clinical operations. He played a pivotal role in restructuring the physician care model by successfully recruiting a network of employed hospitalists and specialty providers to establish the Mercy Medical Group. Under his leadership, the hospital has significantly increased in-network physician utilization, enhancing care continuity for patients and improving overall operational performance.

Dr. Ahmed’s leadership journey spans over two decades across a wide range of clinical and administrative roles. Prior to his current position, he served as Regional Medical Director and Director of Operations at Island Medical Management, overseeing emergency medicine services across multiple hospitals. His clinical acumen was honed through years of frontline practice as an attending emergency physician at leading institutions including St. Catherine’s Hospital, South Nassau Community Hospital, AO Fox Memorial Hospital, and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, where he also served as Associate Director and Core Faculty for the emergency medicine residency program. Finally, for over almost 15 years, Dr. Ahmed has been the medical director for four fire departments in Nassau County offering unwavering support to the professionals that provide the first response to our communities when in need.< /p>

Dr. Ahmed earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition with honors from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at NYIT. He also holds dual undergraduate degrees in Biology and Anthropology from Stony Brook University, and later completed his MBA at Adelphi University to further strengthen his leadership in healthcare administration. A dedicated educator, Dr. Ahmed has held academic appointments for over 20 years, including Assistant Professor at NYIT and faculty roles in medicine and medical nutrition. Dr. Ahmed’s enduring commitment to clinical integrity, education, and system-level improvement continues to shape high-quality, patient centered emergency care at Mercy Hospital and beyond.

Dr. Ahmed balances his work life with his beautiful family, his wife Saba and three children, Zan, Zoya and Naya.  He loves to vacation, cook, watch movies, drive exotic cars and experience art and music.  His favorite super hero and role model that has shaped his life and core values is Superman.
