The Mercy Ball is a celebrated signature event that has become a tradition for Long Island’s holiday social season. A black tie affair organized by the Friends of Mercy since 1936, the Ball is held on the first Saturday of December, and is the largest fundraising event held for Mercy Medical Center. The Friends of Mercy was founded in 1935 as an organization of men dedicated to volunteering their time and efforts to raise funds for the hospital and support the advancement of medical and surgical care for the patients of Mercy.
At the Mercy Ball, graduating male or female seniors selected as the Honor Guard are presented to the Bishop of Rockville Centre. This tradition originated in 1942, when high school students took place for their older brothers, serving in the armed forces in World War II, who had been members of the traditional military Honor Guard. Today, high school seniors continue to serve in this esteemed role.
